Best Things to do in La Paz Mexico

LA PAZ | MEXICO

From the white sand beaches of Cancun and turquoise waters of Cozumel to the exclusive resorts of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is popular among Americans for a tropical getaway.  One place that is more often overlooked is La Paz.  Situated just 100 miles north from the tip of Baja Sur California, La Paz has beautiful beaches, tropical waters and way less tourists that the other hotspots.  The landscape is mountainous and filled with red rocks.  It is as if Arizona were moved to the beach.

There is also so much to do in La Paz.  You can spend your days relaxing by some beautiful pools, snorkeling with whale sharks, off roading through some beachside sand dunes or scuba diving with playful baby sea lions.  Whatever you are looking, you are sure to find it in La Paz.

SCUBA DIVING | FUN BAJA

If you love the water, La Paz is the place for you.  Being on the Sea of Cortez makes this part of Mexico perfect for all kinds of water activities because of the warm, calm waters.  One of my favorite is scuba diving.

There are a variety of dive sites to explore around the La Paz area including a few shipwrecks, some coral reefs and the most famous spot, Los Islotes.  Los Islotes is famous because it is a rock outcropping off the coast of Espiritu Santo where the sea lions come to raise their pups.  The baby sea lions are so friendly and love to play with the divers.  Don’t worry, if you don’t scuba dive, there are also snorkel tours that stop at this location.  Just try to keep an eye on the sea lions because they will try to take your mask or a fin to play with.

The Fang Ming is one of my favorite shipwrecks to explore as well.  It sit just shallow enough the even open water divers can access it.  One thing that makes Fang Ming special is that you can penetrate it and explore inside some of the decks.  Keep an eye out for the giant sea turtle that calls the main deck his home.

SIDE bY SIDE RZR TOUR | SAND DUNES

One of the newest things that we tried on the last trip to La Paz was off roading in the sand dunes.  Equipped with your own 4-seat Polaris Rzr, you create your own adventure as you spend a few hours exploring some of the more remote parts of the La Paz coast.

Once you find the tallest dune in the area, the guides will stop and let everyone spend some time carving up the slopes - of the sand dunes.  Sand boarding is something that I have had the opportunity to try in the past but never did for one reason of another.  With our own private instructor, I decided to give it a shot.  It is so much fun and everyone should at least try it once.  You may end up with a face full of sand but it a blast and you will get the hang of it pretty quickly.

If you are looking for a place to stay in La Paz, Costa Baja Resort and Spa is my favorite place. It is safe, secure and has the best infinity pool in all of La Paz! Check out my other blog post to read all about Costa Baja. If you are looking for a little more space, they also have condo units that you can rent for you and your family in the marina. It still gives you all of the same access to the amazing amenities that the hotel does. You can check those out here.
